How to create a sleep sanctuary:
Bedroom makeover tips from Habitat
16 December 2021

January 2022: The bedroom is where the most time is spent, however when it comes to a home refresh, it can often be one of the more overlooked rooms. A harmonious bedroom environment is crucial for promoting meaningful sleep and rest after the stresses of the day. Colour, sound and lighting are key considerations when curating a mindful sleep space, and can be introduced through sumptuous textiles and on-trend lighting designs. Here to help, Habitat’s design and product development team share their tips for transforming bedrooms into serene sanctuaries in a few easy steps.
Consider colour

“Colour is key when it comes to defining the function of a space. A pastel palette can create a fresh, clean and calming environment, particularly in rooms with an abundance of natural light. Pair cool hues with natural materials such as jute rugs and wooden furniture pieces to produce a space for relaxation."
Andrew Tanner, Design Manager
Play with texture
“Bringing texture into the home is a great way to evoke the senses, and layering soft, high thread count cottons with natural tufted textiles helps build tactility. Bring together cushions and pillows with different design details such as scallops and conversational prints to create interest and depth."
Anna Cross, Buying Manager
Bring the outdoors in

“Adding foliage to your space will purify the air and instantly create a restorative and inviting atmosphere. Our planters offer great ways to show off prized plants but if greenery isn't an option, faux florals or botanical printed textiles will evoke the freshness of nature instead."
Anna Cross, Buying Manager
Small flourishes
“There’s no need for an extensive overhaul; a few small changes can go a long way to transforming a bedroom. Start by swapping out old cushions for a selection of statement pillows. Alternatively, a few standout pieces of wall art can have a huge impact on neutral schemes, injecting both colour and personality."

Switch up lighting
“One of the most important factors we consider when it comes to lighting is not only how it changes the mood of a space, but also what function it delivers. Use a mix of ambient, task and accent lighting to define separate spaces for sleeping, relaxing, reading and working. Switching to a table lamp with low luminosity can help you wind down at the end of a long day, or opt for sconce lighting to free up valuable floor space.”
